The SPEX ® is a computerized, multiple-choice examination of current knowledge requisite for the general, undifferentiated practice of medicine. State boards may require SPEX for endorsement of licensure, reinstatement or a license, or reactivation of a license after a period of inactivity.
The Post-Licensure Assessment System (PLAS) is a joint program of the Federation of State Medical Boards and the National Board of Medical Examiners and provides objective and personalized tools for assessment of physicians’ clinical competence.
The SPEX exam reflects the knowledge and cognitive abilities of all practicing physicians, regardless of specialty practiced. It is used to re-examine a physician's ongoing level of basic medical knowledge and is available to physicians who hold, or previously held, an unrestricted license in the U.S. or Canada
PLAS provides tools to facilitate comprehensive assessment of physicians' clinical competence.
